South Bali – Beach Clubs, Restaurants, Villas and Surf

Nature
The wow factor for nature - does it show nature at its best? Doesn't need to be the wildebeest migration or diving with hundreds of hammerheads. Rather make you pause as you realise just how awesome the natural world can be
2
Culture
How much does this experience showcase some of the better and finer things that us humans can offer? Sure, it can be ancient ruins and renaissance churches, but it can also be festivals or soaking up some of the great modern cities of the world
6
Fun factor/activity
Very simple - was it fun? This is usually linked in with doing some kind of activity - i mean, walking along some cliffs is nice, but paragliding from them, now that is fun. Its a vastly underrated factor in a truly great experience
8
Avoid the crowds
Big tour groups and being surrounded by loud fellow tourists can sap the life out of even the greatest of travel experiences. This score is to reflect just how much you can avoid this. But. . . The score also takes into account if the crowds actually add to the experience, such as with a party town or a bustling local market
3
World famous
How world famous is the experience?
5
unique
How hard is it to have a similar experience in other places round the world?
7

Wow Factor
The wow factor reflects just how much you’re likely to say “wow”. As there’s a lot of experiences in the world, and a lot of wows, i’ve gone with a simple ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ to ⭐️ score, and a separate category for the truly "gash"

Summary

South Bali – places like Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu – is where most first-time visitors to Bali end up.  This is the Bali of world-class beach clubs, great restaurants, cool villas, surfing, sunset drinks and lazy days by the pool.  It’s fun and very easy to have a good time here.

But it’s also busy, quite commercialised and not really the “old Bali” you might be imagining. Traffic can be bad, the beaches in places like Seminyak and Canggu are not the best, and in some areas it can feel more like a very warm version of Sydney or Los Angeles than a remote Indonesian island.

So is South Bali worth visiting? Yes, the beach clubs are arguably the best in the world and justify a visit on their own.  But if you want the real Bali vibe, mix it up:

Best areas in South Bali

Seminyak

Seminyak is probably the most classic place to stay for a first trip to Bali. It’s fairly central, full of good restaurants, beach clubs and villas, and is a good base for a few days. It’s a bit more polished and slightly older crowd than Canggu, and a different world to the lash centre of Kuta.

Canggu

Canggu is trendier, a bit more chaotic, and very popular with surfers, digital nomads and the cafe/brunch crowd. Lots of great food, beach bars and a younger vibe. Traffic here can be particularly bad, but it’s a fun place to spend a few days.

Uluwatu / Bukit Peninsula – recommendation 🥇

Uluwatu is quite different – cliffs, surf breaks, beach clubs on cliffs, and a bit more spread out and relaxed. The beaches around here are generally better than Seminyak/Canggu, and it feels less urban. Perfect for a few nights, especially if you like surfing, dramatic coastline and sunset spots, and our favourite spot in South Bali.

Restaurant and Beach Club recommendations

I don’t think its an exaggeration to say that Bali has some of the best restaurants in the world and I would argue the best beach clubs.

Top 5 Beach clubs:

  • Potato Head for wow factor high end 🥇
  • Finns for the slightly cheaper but still fun alternative that is also very central on the main beach
  • Savaya for the high end big party vibe and views
  • Sundays Beach Club for the best beach and more chilled vibe
  • El Cabron for views and lash

Restaurants recommendations:

  • Seminyak – Sardines, Sarong and Mehra Putih
  • Canggu – Zali, Bar Vera Mewali Sesh
  • Uluwatu – Ours Uluwatu, M Mason Bar Grill
  • For something special and a bit to the north – visit Locavore NXT 🥇.  20 course tasting menu, all locally sourced, all housed within their labyrinth grounds, and one of the most wow food experiences I’ve had.

Villa lifestyle

South Bali is brilliant for affordable private villas. Renting a villa with a private pool and a couple of bedrooms is very doable, and it’s one of the main reasons people love this part of Bali.

A typical good day in South Bali looks like:

  • Breakfast at a cafe
  • Relax at your villa pool
  • Zip about on the moped or surf in the afternoon
  • Sunset drinks
  • Nice dinner
  • Repeat

It’s not a place where you need a huge checklist of sights — it’s more about lifestyle and enjoying being there.

Practical tips

Traffic: Traffic in South Bali can be shocking.  Best tip is just get used to it – getting around just about anywhere can take hours.  Try not to plan too many things in different areas on the same day.

Getting around: download the Grab app.  Bali seems to run on it.

How long to spend: Around 3–5 days is a good amount of time for South Bali. Much longer than that and you’ll probably want to see another side of the island.

Best as part of a wider Bali trip:  South Bali works best when combined with Ubud and/or Northern Bali so you get beaches + jungle + quieter nature.  The ideal trip looks a bit like:

  • 3–5 days South Bali
  • 2–4 days Ubud
  • 3–5 days North Bali (if you have enough time and want something quieter and more nature-focused)
