5 Travel Lessons I Wish I Knew Earlier

Small, practical tips I figured out over the years - for travellers who want more than just a checklist.

General Travel Tips:

  • Don't be a lemming

Often as a traveller, you're presented with a classic option: Option A is the famous 10/10 place that is chockablock daft full of fellow tourists; or Option B which is the less famous 8/10 place that you'll have to yourself. The tourist industry is designed to get you to Option A. Go for Option B.

  • Try to nail the wow moments

Its the wow moments you remember. You and your group will only vaguely remember and reminisce about ticking off all places to see in Phuket. You'll never stop talking about the time it was just you and the champagne watching the sunset over Koh Phi Phi.

  • Chose the fun option

Temples and churches are great; so are wine regions; so are tropical islands; so are mountains. But taking mopeds to them; drinking your way through them; scuba diving them; and skiing them is just better. If you can, add Fun.

  • Avoid the crowds if you can

You didn't jump on the plane and take the time off to be surrounded by tour groups. So get up early, try somewhere different, meet the locals - whatever it takes to break away from the standard commercialised tourist conveyor belt.

  • Try to get lost!

Sure its nice to follow the map and make sure you see everything, but do that at the end. When you first get to a city or classic old town, instead try to first get lost and enjoy that traveller's wonder you'll have of finding something you weren't expecting.
