Koh Tao Diving and Island Life

Nature
The wow factor for nature - does it show nature at its best? Doesn't need to be the wildebeest migration or diving with hundreds of hammerheads. Rather make you pause as you realise just how awesome the natural world can be
8
Culture
How much does this experience showcase some of the better and finer things that us humans can offer? Sure, it can be ancient ruins and renaissance churches, but it can also be festivals or soaking up some of the great modern cities of the world
5
Fun factor/activity
Very simple - was it fun? This is usually linked in with doing some kind of activity - i mean, walking along some cliffs is nice, but paragliding from them, now that is fun. Its a vastly underrated factor in a truly great experience
8
Avoid the crowds
Big tour groups and being surrounded by loud fellow tourists can sap the life out of even the greatest of travel experiences. This score is to reflect just how much you can avoid this. But. . . The score also takes into account if the crowds actually add to the experience, such as with a party town or a bustling local market
4
World famous
How world famous is the experience?
6
unique
How hard is it to have a similar experience in other places round the world?

Wow Factor
The wow factor reflects just how much you’re likely to say “wow”. As there’s a lot of experiences in the world, and a lot of wows, i’ve gone with a simple ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ to ⭐️ score, and a separate category for the truly "gash"

Summary

Koh Tao in Thailand is one of the world’s most famous places to learn to dive, with warm water, cheap courses and easy dive sites. I’d argue that the diving isn’t as world-class as other places nearby (its a bit to crowded to be honest), but what really makes Koh Tao special is the island itself – great beaches, a lively backpacker scene and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that makes people never leave.

It’s real highlight is the Sai Ri Beach backpacker vibe – I can’t think of too many places that have that wonderful combo of chilled + party ✅, sunset views ✅, cheap + high end options ✅, and without being ruined by cars and mopeds ✅. They’ve really nailed it.

Plus, taking a moped round the very accessible island to a lot of the hidden spots is one of the best moped experiences in SE Asia.

If you drop your expectations of it being “world class diving”, and enjoy it for a chilled island getaway that offers beautiful scenery and ease of turning the on/off switch for partying, it’s a great little trip.

Highlights

1. The beach backpacker vibe of San Ri Beach - I can’t think of too many better places in SE Asia for it, and the sunsets are fab

2. Renting a scooter, exploring the small island and being rewarded with beautiful views

3. Diving Sail Rock - it’s a 2 hour boat ride but definitely worth it. One of the best sites in SE Asia

4. Trying free diving - not everyone’s cup of tea (I was embarrassingly rubbish at it), but Koh Tao is one of the easiest places to try

Top Tips for Koh Tao

Try to stay around the San Ri Beach area

It’s such a great vibe and you can easily find a spot that is quiet for the evenings if you want it. I stayed at the Natural Boutique Cottage and, although not exactly luxury, was super quiet and allowed me to nip in and out of the areas I wanted.

Rent a scooter

They’re real easy to get and drive (just about everywhere rents them), and such a cool way to explore the island at your own pace. Be sure to visit:

  • One of the central view spots – there are several all around the peak and Mango View Point Cafe was nice.
  • Atlantis Restaurant at Dusit Buncha for a drink overlooking the tiny island to the North East called Koh Nang Yuan.
  • One of the east facing beaches – Ao Tanote Beach and Haad Tai Daeng are nice.

Dive Sail Rock

If you’re a semi decent diver, it’s a must. It’s a 2 hour boat trip there that typically goes very early morning. I went with New Way Diving as they were the earliest to get there and would recommend.

Koh Tao is also a hub for Freediving for beginners.

I went with Apnea Total Freediving (the original dive shop to use the apnea technique) and would recommend.

Getting to Koh Tao from Koh Samui is easy

Heaps of ferries leaving from 3 spots in Koh Samui for flexibility.  Be prepared for a potentially bumpy ride.  My way back was smooth, but the way there was rough AF.
