The Aeolian Islands

Nature
The wow factor for nature - does it show nature at its best? Doesn't need to be the wildebeest migration or diving with hundreds of hammerheads. Rather make you pause as you realise just how awesome the natural world can be
8
Culture
How much does this experience showcase some of the better and finer things that us humans can offer? Sure, it can be ancient ruins and renaissance churches, but it can also be festivals or soaking up some of the great modern cities of the world
6
Fun factor/activity
Very simple - was it fun? This is usually linked in with doing some kind of activity - i mean, walking along some cliffs is nice, but paragliding from them, now that is fun. Its a vastly underrated factor in a truly great experience
7
Avoid the crowds
Big tour groups and being surrounded by loud fellow tourists can sap the life out of even the greatest of travel experiences. This score is to reflect just how much you can avoid this. But. . . The score also takes into account if the crowds actually add to the experience, such as with a party town or a bustling local market
7
World famous
How world famous is the experience?
5
unique
How hard is it to have a similar experience in other places round the world?
9

Wow Factor
The wow factor reflects just how much you’re likely to say “wow”. As there’s a lot of experiences in the world, and a lot of wows, i’ve gone with a simple ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ to ⭐️ score, and a separate category for the truly "gash"
⭐⭐⭐

Summary

Idyllic island group (UNESCO world heritage listed) ✅

Perfect hot dry Mediterranean climate ✅

One of the Top 10 Old Towns in all Europe (Lipari) ✅

Wineries offering world class dessert wine (Salina) ✅

Volcanoes to provide the extra (Stromboli and Vulcano islands) ✅

Easy to access and not expensive (15 1hr hydrofoils leaving per day Milazzo to Lipari alone) ✅

. . .  and the critical feeling of adventure as you jump on and off ferries to get around ✅

I’m surprised the Aeolian Islands don’t get more attention. They really do tick so many of the boxes that any island experience in the world would be happy to meet, yet alone one right in the middle of the Mediterranean.  I wouldn’t quite put it up there with the likes of the Galapagos, Sorrentino Peninsular, Komodo, Raja Ampat etc (it probably misses the outrageous “wow” factor), but if done right it’s as idyllic an experience you can get in the Mediterranean.

2. Sampling wines and the world class sweet wines on Salina. Here with Fenech - not because of views etc, but because the wine tasting is run by the owner who is 10/10 genuine, super generous and the real star

Top Tips for the Aeolian Islands

Stay for at least 2 nights

A day trip would have a very different vibe. The multi day means you can enjoy the spots (especially the Lipari Old Town) without the crowds, and enjoy the view from the location recommendation (below).

Rent a car

Massive faff trying to get around Lipari without it, and super cheap.  I think we paid something like €30 per day for a basic Fiat in summer 2025.

Where to stay

If you can, stay at Villa a’Pisa on Lipari.  The views made our whole trip, and with a short 10min drive to Lipari Town.

Prioritise Lipari

Lipari Town is one of the cutest old towns in the Med – mostly pedestrianised and with a genuine soul to it (vs just touristy).  Be sure to visit both the castle area and the mini harbour of Marina Cortina for the best restaurants and vibe.

If looking for a beach . . .

. . . remember Italian beaches are gash.  But, White Beach had a great beach bar area. If looking for a mini walk, Monte Gardia has stunning views of Vulcano and the rest of Lipari. The drive round the island is also cute and worth doing.

Salina Island

Do a day trip for the wine. Aim for Malfa via taxi or bus as that’s where the majority of the wineries are and the drive around is pretty. We had an amazing experience with Fenech – not because of views etc, but because the wine tasting is run by the owner who is 10/10 genuine, super generous and the real star of the show.

Volcanoes

Vulcano is the easy one as so close to Lipari, but it isn’t active and arguably the better views of it are from Lipari. Stromboli is the more guaranteed option for lava, but it’s a 7-8 hour total trip (the tour operators try to fill the time up via stops along the way so you leave at 230am ish and are back 1030pm ish.

Go in May / June or September

Beautiful weather and avoid the summer holiday crowds.

The rest of Sicily

Gosh what a beautiful place Sicily is.  Oodles of (crumbling) history, some of the most beautiful Old Towns anywhere on the planet, and natural beauty abound.  A true highlight of Europe.  If visiting for the first time, this is how I would think about prioritising your visit:

#1 The Old Towns of Eastern Sicily – Taormina, Syracuse, Ragusa and Modica are world-beating.  This is the highlight of Sicily.  See the travel entry for Wandering the Old Towns of Eastern Sicily for tips.  Wow Factor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#2 The Aeolian Islands – as above, how are these not more famous? They offer so much. Wow Factor ⭐️⭐️⭐️

#3 Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples – simply one of the top preserved ancient ruins anywhere in the world.  So good that the UNESCO logo is based on it.  Slightly out the way but worth it even if not a history enthusiast.

#4 Western Sicily’s coastline – Scopello is picture-perfect, the mountains dramatic and Trapani lovely to walk around.  If visiting the west, prioritise this over Palermo.  Wow Factor ⭐️⭐️⭐️

#5 Palermo – it’s nice, it really is.  The Via Maqueda is full of history, and nearby Monreale’s Cathedral and walks along the cliffs by Mondello are cool . . . its just not as cool as those above.  See Palermo and surrounding towns for tips.  Wow Factor ⭐️
